Ponds for afforestation
For afforestation in the Lake Argyle area, landscaping work will be needed in hilly areas. Rainwater does not linger in these areas and quickly drains away, eroding the soil and carrying away young plants. Such areas dry out quickly, the groundwater is too deep here. In order to raise the water table and plant broadleaf trees, small pond systems will need to be built.
Artificial waterscapes and additional species of trees, shrubs and grasses will reduce the likelihood of severe droughts and floods.
Properly form a pond is an art. Here we can mention a few basic points:
- If the pond looks as if the lake has always been here, or if it looks natural, then everything is done correctly. Such a reservoir will be filled with clean and cool water.
- We avoid artificial corner or round shapes and steep banks. We choose forms of nature that are curved, winding and with shallow shores.
- When creating ponds, we use what is given by nature. In most cases, the lowest point on the plot is the most suitable location for a pond. Overground and underground water flows here.
- The shape of the pond must remain self-cleaning.
This effect is based on the biological degradation of organic bonds by microorganisms. This process requires oxygen. With a good oxygen supply, the self-cleaning ability is also high. The water in the pond receives oxygen from plants and from the interaction of water with air. Properly designed, the water in a pond or lake is almost always in slight motion. If the water can move, it can always be clean and clear.
